Nowadays, logistics costs are not only used to express monetary value. They also include external costs such as climate change, air pollution, waste disposal, noise, and accidents. When the question “What is green logistics?” is asked, it refers to the environmental impacts caused by activities in this field.
Green logistics is often referred to as ecological logistics. It is used to minimize the environmental impact of transportation, storage, and other logistics activities. It is known to encompass measures taken by the logistics industry and sustainability policies. These policies ensure both economic and environmental efficiency, while also creating sustainable value in the logistics sector.
The concept of green logistics plays a role in influencing processes such as transportation, distribution, and storage of products. A general approach in logistics often overlooks environmental sustainability in decision-making processes. On the other hand, green logisticians aim to establish an effective balance between ecology and economy. By ensuring environmental protection, green logistics has become a key objective for global governing bodies and is prioritized in the supply chain industry.
Green logistics, which includes business practices that make operations sustainable, is based on traditional logistics principles. Unlike traditional methods, it focuses on the environment alongside successful logistics operations. The main goal of green logistics is to improve organizations and make them more compatible with nature. Today, many global companies aim to adapt their logistics operations accordingly. For example, Etsy is implementing several initiatives to offset carbon emissions, aiming to reduce them to zero by 2030.
Green logistics activities offer numerous advantages, most of which are considered important for companies, suppliers, business partners, and customers. For instance, they ensure long-term profitability. Having new or improved business partners helps companies maintain sustainable supply chains. Green logistics benefits not only customers but also corporate partners.
Examples of green logistics show that transportation activities are more efficient and environmentally friendly. Additionally, improvements in distribution systems, reduction of packaging and waste, disposal of solid and hazardous waste, and control of emissions and noise are among the key details. Logistics activities involve increased energy use and reduced material consumption. The logistics sector continues to evolve alongside technological advancements and global trade, adapting to these changes.
Companies aim to act in line with their customers’ needs and expectations. Plans are made to meet these demands while showing sensitivity toward ecology. Efforts to maintain a sustainable supply chain help minimize environmental damage. At this stage, green logistics practices become a topic of interest.
Generally, green logistics practices ensure that the production and distribution of goods do not harm the ecological system. This means processes continue in harmony with nature in a healthier way. Environmental and social factors are also considered in green logistics activities. Environmental analyses and optimal planning of products are part of these efforts.
Authorities mandate the use of environmentally friendly vehicles and fuels, such as EURO 5-compliant vehicles. Renewable energy is used in storage and facilities. Packaging material usage is minimized, and recyclable alternatives are preferred. Steps are taken to encourage recycling activities. Flexible transportation models are also planned.
In summary, sustainable and green logistics activities help protect the environment in the competitive landscape created by globalization. The main reasons for the global adoption of green logistics include customer influence and corporate social responsibility. To ensure a livable world for future generations, all companies in the logistics sector are advised to implement policies such as green logistics practices.
